Josellen didn’t plan for a career in banking. She planned to work in the medical field, but when she needed a more convenient schedule, she turned to banking…and never looked back.
“My degrees are in biology and medical technology so no, I didn’t plan on becoming a banker,” Josellen said. “I chose banking when my daughter was young so I could spend more time with her. I soon learned how much customer interaction meant to me.”
Before banking, Josellen worked at the University of North Carolina’s blood bank for seven years. After moving to Pennsylvania, she began her banking career at a large bank before joining First Keystone Community Bank as a teller.
“I was looking for a smaller bank that was more community-oriented and would allow me to learn and grow,” Josellen said. “First Keystone was the right fit as I am now a Keystone Banker II customer service representative.”
Josellen cites customer interaction as her favorite part of a career in banking. “The best part of my job is helping customers with their financial needs, from loans to checking accounts. The only way to help them choose the best product to meet their needs is by listening to them, learning about their families and their lives. I had little opportunity to do that at my previous profession.”
When Josellen isn’t working, she can be found gardening, which she shares with her co-workers at their branch, reading mystery novels, vacationing at the beach, and hiking the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee.
But being a part of a community bank with roots steeped in values and tradition has helped her come full circle. “Working at a small bank allows me to know my customers and co-workers so I can put a face to a name and they can, too. It’s helped me build relationships and friendships.”
